The tree felling debacle by Sheffield Council

If you read Newspapers, industry press and/or follow social media last year you might have been aware of the seemingly outrageous, underhand actions or Sheffield Council in removing huge numbers of predominantly healthy trees under the guise of "safety".

The actions and debate has now made National TV News, with a segment on BBC One's - The One Show, which you can watch here via iPlayer - skip to timeline 11m 15s onwards.....

Worth watching to understand the debate as many feel it could be the tip of the iceberg, with similar actions potentially happening in other tree lined roads around the UK due to 'costs'.

Personally, it seems criminal unless there are clear and urgent needs to take action....

  • it has been on our local news a lot. getting the police to knock folk up at 5-30 am saying move your car now or get towed so the trees could be cut down without fore notice is wrong

as most of the trees are in good health and minor ground damage I wonder what there motive is maybe it is that they neglected maintenance on them for a lot of years as it looks like they could be overdue for pollarding or has the council got there fingers in the pie of timber somewhere

do the tree surgeons of Sheffield have problems when applying for private tree work ?

I think when the local elections come round a few of them could loos there jobs

  • Haven't heard of this before...........It does seem strange that the council would spend all this money in felling trees if they could avoid it......... guess it saves them clearing all the leaves up. Reading up on it, they do appear to be planting replacements.... whether that's quite true, don't know............. so are they just doing a lot of forward planning?

dont even start on national rails approach to safety issues regarding trees

      criminal --

  • I understand there's avenues of Limes to be destroyed, plus a mature, healthy Elm amongst many others.  Awful.

  • Maybe if the government would send some money north, instead of spending it all in London our council would have some money to spare, and wouldn't be going to extremes. Our council seems to be on it's last legs to be fair.

  • Its not actually the council carrying out the works. They have a contract for all the abor work with Amey which makes me think the council might be getting their pants pulled down some what.

Might be completely wrong but if you employ a company to assess trees and highways knowing that they will get any of the following works it seems only logical that they're being somewhat heavy handed on the surveying.
