Dose the turf carbon footprint take into account the fuel used by the mowers to keep it as turf? #justsayin
This is what I hate about stats.
You don't know with those figures how they are comparing the 2.
Not that cutting grass uses much fuel in my opinion.
add in aerator,scarifier,strimmer,blower.....
Would that not depend on how 'managed' the grass area is ?
I'd suggest the majority of lawns are not aerated or scarified......
Does that change the balance ?
I think even without the cost of petrol just for the mower, you still have all additional costs before even cutting the grass.. fuel/oil/tyres/servicing/mot for van, manufacturing mowers/parts/transport/servicing/oil/filters, there's a massive carbon footprint before even arriving at the lawns..
Also how much carbon footprint does the artificial grass have to arrive on site?
And plastic grass never reduces its carbon footprint where the real thing is always removing C02
....and 90+% of those addtional costs also applies for installing, maintaining and repairing artifical turf .....
Would that not balance out for both sides ?
..........and playing devil's advocate ;)
In my opinion no, because if we're talking about 1 on 1 here.. as once an artificial lawn has been installed, that's it, however, the real lawn still needs to be maintained, hence the ongoing costs, hence the bigger carbon footprint.. surely (no my name's not Shirley)
A maintenance schedule for artifical grass includes regular sweeping (mechanical - certainly for anything other than a small lawn) resanding or crumbing, dealing with airbourne weeds, washing down, repairs, blowing off leaves etc.
Take a look at what they have to do to a 3G sports pitch, like a floodlit 5-a-side one :0) !
A common misconception is that artificial lawns are "maintenance free" - They are not if you want to maintain to a similar level as a lawn.
Of course you could do nothing to it, just as you could do nothing to a grass area (but at least you get a meadow area with all the bio-diversity that follows...)
How many years does the artificial stuff last?
The grass will last forever if cut regularly.
Does the sun not destroy the fake stuff over time?
