Stihl HS45 Vs Stihl HS56?

Hi everyone, I purchased a Stihl HS45 24" Hedge trimmer this year and have loved using it, for next season I'm thinking of investing in the HS56, is the 56 just a more refined version of the 45? Or is there more to it?Many thanks Harry

Anyone worked with a Stihl HS56 hedge trimmer?
    • I had an HS56 for about 12 months until it was nicked a couple of weeks ago! (my fault.... forgot to lock the van) Lovely machine, easy to start, low vibrations, very light.... a pleasure to work with. Decided to try replacing it with the cordless HSA86 as I needed something a bit quieter at the old folks home I maintain. Still miss the HS56 which seemed to have a bit more power though this might be an illusion as the cordless is so quiet.

  • I had a look at one in the dealership while waiting and yes I would say it's an improved and refined version of the 45. You get double sided blades etc. I run a 45 and a 82, and the 82 makes the 45 seem like a toy.
    • i replaced my 45 with 56 in spring the 56 is alot lighter and vibes are less

    Hi Harry
Had mine for around 2 yrs and carnt fault it.....would defo buy again, light powerful enough, well balanced, And can use it all day long at 4.5kg.....I have a 81t also but don't use it any more since I brought the 56.

Thank you for the feedback everyone, reckon I'm going to go for the 56 in the spring, like yourself Mark I have the 82 which has only been used once this season since I brought my 45, cheers guys...:-)
  •   Harry, So you don't use your HS82?  I'm surprised.  Since I bought mine it's never gone more than a day or so without being used. Its pretty much all I ever use- well, that and the Kombi which is lighter and well balanced, which gives the old back and arms a bit of a break! . But the 82R is a beast that flies through hedges, so if there is any long lengths of hedge involved I just crack on with it.

Not really no, my 82R sits and gathers dust, I gave it a run the other week just to keep it ticking over, but on the whole 99.9% of my hedges are tightly clipped, I don't have any thick growth hedges to cut through so the HS45 is ample, if i don't use it again by the spring I'll probably sell the 82R on...
  • Thanks for this topic, handy for me as i'm planning to buy a new small cutter for the spring and this is helpful. I use the small length cutters for shaping shrubs etc.

What surprises me though is how many seem to get by with just 24" hedge cutters. What do you all cut big hedges with? I'm not talking about enormous hedges that are 12 feet high or anything, but maybe even around 5 feet high but really long. I use a 30" Shindaiwa, which is an excellent machine, but i'm considering upgrading to a 40" Echo HC-341ES to save time. Doesn't doing all your hedges with a relatively small hedge cutter just take absolutely ages?

Haha, I use my HS45, I own the 82R 30 inch, but have also owned until recently a 82T with 40 inch blades, great machine but tbh for some hedges it was too long, heavy to use all day every day, and the gear ratio was spead up compared to the standard 82T with the 30 inch blades, so unless you are cutting really light hedges such as well trimmed Privet or Yew then it would not grab and cut the branches, it would kind of skip along. Yes the 30inch blade setup is slightly quicker than the 24inch but the weight difference means I still feel fresh at the end of the day, a compromise I'm happy to make...:-)
