Stihl four-mix engines

I know some of you service these engines yourselves, so any help welcomed.

I can follow the online guides to the letter, but my engine still runs slow and "falters" under load. It just feel it's straining, and I've obviously got something wrong.

The guides suggest you point the arrow towards a screw to line up TDC. I find mine is unhappy to line up there, and slips either side of that point. I've tried having a helper hold it exactly on that point, but still no better.

Assuming I can set it to the same wrong setting consistently, what do I need to adjust the inlet and oulet valves by to give a more smooth setting?

  • I never use the TDC marks but if you do, a few degrees either way doesn't make any difference as the valves are fully closed over quite a number of degrees rotation. Myself, I just rotate the crankshaft and stop approximately when the valves are in the middle of their fully closed position    always works with no problems. You'll find it difficult to stop the crankshaft at TDC due to the magnets in the flywheel. Souinds more like a carb problem though. 

  • someone told me that the 4 mix engines need to run on the green stihl 2 stroke oil or they do run rough . not try it yet so could not say for sure

  • As Rory says Stihl HP Ultra or Stihl HP Super green oils are the ones to choose! Using the red can cause rough running. I know from experience. 

    Also it does sound more like a carb problem, possibly soaked air filter? Also know this from experience

    I have only used HP oil for many years. The old red stuff is so obsolete I don't know why they sell it!

    The filter's cleaned and perfect. My reasoning was that all my four mix engines have always become sluggish when the valves needed setting, and also hard to start. Not failing to start, but needing a real tug as if the compression was too great.

    This is the first one I've tried to service myself. It has been better after every valve adjustment, just never feels right.

    I was swapping it with  regular 81R hedgecutter yesterday. That felt like it revved more freely, was more responsive, never bogged down on what was a very wet and overgrown hedge. The long-reach just struggles slightly to rev when you pull the trigger, slows down when it's under load, and never feels like it's at full speed.

    Might need to go in the shop, but you never learn from that. I always over-service, so try to do the valves every 25-30 hours. That's a lot of money if you're paying £80 a time.

    • Definitely not cheap. Someone must have instructions on it somewhere ??
    • £80 for valve adjustment seems extortionate as it really is a 15 minute job if you're used to it..... try Browns in Leighton Buzzard assuming they're not the crooks!! I had a chainsaw repaired there which necessitated the carb being stripped, cleaned and adjusted for £35. I'm still using the old red oil..... unfortunately, I bought a load cheap before I realised the benefits of the HP. Have tried the HP though and didn't notice any change in the running though I understand its main advantage is the engine doesn't get carbon building up inside...... particularly with the 4-mix engines. Wonder if your exhaust is blocked....... I had similar problems with an old HS61 hedgecutter and that turned out to be the problem....might be worth taking it off and make sure you can blow through it easily.  Could it be the hedgecutter head thats very tight?....... can you swap the head over onto another unit..... a lot of Stilhl strimmers can swap the heads over.......... to check if thats the problem?

      • Good point about the spark arrrester, I thought we didn't have them fitted any more in the UK but that was a common issue in the past.

        Will check that out.

  • Echo Geoffrey thoughts, I had a stihl HS45 Hedger and Stihl Blower. Both had running sluggish problems. Turned out to be spark arrestor. After replacing both units spark arrestors things ran fine. Not saying this is the issue, but it was one of those things I checked first having been made aware of the problem years ago
