  • Although I have an 86T, I find the 86R fine for everything and gives a good finish on all hedges.

The T works on anything fine, yew, privet etc, the R works best on thicker wood as the blade spacings size are bigger and the engine moved them slower, i had a 40" T and found that every time I tried to trim up anything of any tuffness it just kind of bounced off and skipped what you were trying to trim because the blades are moving a lot faster than on the R types, but for the finer trimming it worked great...

What hedges would you class as fine trimming ?? In your opinion
      • Thinking of Yew privet & Conifer

As long as it's a pretty well kept hedge and your just tidying it up, rather than hedge cutting heavy into old wood .

Gotta say though mate, if I was to come and trim the same hedge as you with the 87R version, you would probably not be able to tell the difference but having the R will mean you can tackle thicker cutting jobs too...:-)

Mine suddenly stopped working today. Long reach did the same a month ago. They are about 4 months old. Have you had any trouble with reliability?

The long reach started screeching and the red lights came up. They said they regreased and 'reset' it and it's working fine at the mo but for how long? The hsa 86 was working fine, possibly a bit louder than normal then nothing. Trigger just dead and no red lights. When I bought them i asked about keeping them greased like a normal petrol one and they said it's a sealed unit and should only need it on service but that doesn't sound right to me. If this is going to happen regularly I would like to know how they reset it so I can do this a not wait 2 weeks for my busy mower shop to get to it! They gave me a spare to borrow this time as I kicked up a fuss.
  • I bought the 82R this year and I love it. it makes my HS45 feel like a toy, and I use it for all the trimming I do, which is mostly privet, and it does a nice clean tidy job.

    • I bought a hs81r off eBay as I don't do huge volumes of hedges. Done a couple of one off jobs and it's amazing how much you can cut with it in a small space of time
