Stachys - problems!

Anyone else had any problems with Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears' or 'Silver Carpet' suffering over the last Winter/Spring? One client said they looked all Winter as though the cat had thrown up over the plant bed, and they are struggling back into growth now in a patchy fashion. She's not impressed! I know they need sun and good drainage, but I didn't expect them to be this delicate - anyone else had problems with them?

  • If you drag off all the dead foliage you should find new shoots emerging from the stems underneath.  In a few weeks they'll recover and look okay again.   The 'furry' leaves always suffer in cold and wet winters, but the plants are pretty resiliant and usually bounce back.

  • Most of of our ' mediterranean ' type plants suffered this last winter. The santolina ( cotton lavender ) (H)edging is now very patchy with some cut to the ground and others fine. We lost all of our thymes, so I have had to rename the thyme border !, and most of the sages. Like your client the stachys and artemisias went very brown but after cutting back nearly to ground level in March and a handful of general fertilizer they are now looking good and not minding this med weather.
