Snow clearing, is it worth the hassle?

After few inches of Snow has fallen overnight and frozen, is it worth the hassle to offer a basic path/drive clearing service?

is it a legal nightmare thats not worth entering? As we are in the Sue for trips and falls, and people are out to sue for any injury caused.

i have Public laibilty insurance but need to read into it if i am covered.

Just want to know if others do provide the service or to avoid it?

Thanks Richard.

I don't but then I don't want the hassle winter is time to recharge the batteries so to speak!
Do check you pl though I've got a £10M policy and I don't know if I'm covered to be honest.
    Where are you based?
It's not worth the bother in Lincoln as in 15 years there has been only a couple of occasions when actual snow clearance rather than gritting for ice has been needed
    • I am in the North East of Scotland, in my first winter after starting up in May this Year and cant sit on my hands whilst the weather doesn't allow me out.

I think i will ride through this winter and get some serious cover as it can be a major part of my winter work up here. And invest in the proper equipment to do it i guess.

We looked a couple of years ago when we had heavy snow and decided against. It was a mix of concern of litigation, extra danger on the roads from others and possible hassle. If someone was of the mind to sue, and it may not just be the property owner, then irrespective of being insured or not, it could be a huge amount of hassle.

What I did think of was calling my customers and seeing if any needed help with supplies, offering a delivery service; eg pop to the shops, get some essentials and deliver. Didn't progress that either - again, although my defender would have given sterling service, it was others on the roads I worried about.

I would help the elderly customers I have out with deliveries if they wanted. But not as a chargeable service as such. I only have 3 or 4 who would be stuck so it would be a helping hand no more.

yes, would have been petrol donations only.

I'm sure they would want to pay something anyway as they are nice people I'm lucky that most of my clients are nice to work for.
  • What about contacting local sites that have to stay open, to see what they have in place for snow events?

Down here many LJN members are part of the Heathrow snow team, and I'd guess things like airports etc. elsewhere will need people.

We are still on the lookout for recruits for Heathrow. If anyone is interested please drop me a line!

  • There's three people on here that do it Rory Irvine, landscope and turfcape Scotland.

However it will need a lot of investment I've got the official document from highways as to what you need to run a snow plough legally.

You will earn more money gritting to
    • or Golden Snow as we call it !
