security of tools/vans

Whilst out tidying and sorting out the van yesterday. An unscrupulous sort of bloke came over and started to chat without taking too much attention to the chatting he seemed to be eyeing up my tools of course I quickly shut the van doors but not before he clocked most of what I had. Now call me a bit paranoid but I am now looking for security locks etc and want to find the best. Ive searched the internet and most of the locks can be picked in a matter of seconds. What does everyone else have for securing tools/vans?I don't have a lockup only a very small shed that's already full. I even thought of security cages like the police have to keep the unwanted in their vans but cant seem to find any that are ready to fit.

I have slam locks fitted to my side door and rear doors. So even when my van is unlocked or if I forget to lock it, the rear cannot be opened without a key. I had someone break into the front, push the button so unlock all the doors but couldn't get in because of the slam locks. Well worth the money
  • Slam locks are a good idea and possibly look at an alarm immob. Often if it makes a noise they will run after grabbing something small.

Thatcham Cat 1 is what you want!
  • after my van was stripped whilst I working 15 yards from it in a front garden, I fitted meroni ufo locks. Found them to be very good and as they come off and hang on your key when you unlock them, theyre a big reminder to put them back on!

  • Dead locks are meant to be the holy grail of locks, a bit pricey though and you do need a key to open them (no electronic push button on key fob for these locks). Its possible to get a company (google it) to supply and fit to any make of van/car

  • The down side with deadlocks as I know it, is that you manually have to set them. Slam locks are integrated with your current C/L system. Much easier to set as when the door shuts they are locked. Not as secure as a deadlock but far more practical and you can't forget to lock it.

£80-£100 per lock fitted I saw last time. May have changed. Just have a good search and make sure they are thatcham cat 1. Maybe have tracker installed to bring insurance down to?
  • I think what I may do for now is get a ufo lock for the back and side doors. Then on the inside of the rear door fix a couple of hesvy duty brackets and put a bar across. The vans alarmed with an immobiliser only factory fitted but it should make a noise, if anyone takes any notice thats another matter. Ive looked at slam locks and a bit cautious as Ive had the wind caught the door while ive been inside and shut the mrs wouldn't realise id gone until the washing up started to pile up :)
    Thankyou for the suggestions
    • That's why slam locks work with the internal handle to let you out still. By doing what you plan to do they will just peel back your side door instead.

Slam locks on both with covert deadbolts which throw with c/l would be ideal.

Just be aware - a determined thief will, given half a chance cut the side out of the van with tin cutters, its faster, easier makes much less noise than breaking locks off.

There was a spate of old and new vans done over like this around here a while ago - in every case insurers wrote the vans off as 'beyond economic repair' as the would have needed such extensive body work repairs.

  • I have seen online concertina doors fitted to second hand vans for sale, does anyone have any experience with this style of security and know anywhere that fits them? Thanks
  • slam locks combined with a clifford alarm system is the way to go, not the cheapest but it does bring your insurance down and is worth every penny.
