river cobbles for paving?

I've designed a courtyard with a bit of a Mediterranean feel, and 'm looking for a supplier of flattish rounded cobbles suitable for laying tightly into a mortar bed, to create a decorative edging which is also OK to walk on. I want them to be fairly linear so they need to be flattish and laid on edge. Colour pale/buff. CED do a flat beige pebble that looks suitable but is out of stock and comes from Indonesia - I'd rather have a more locally sourced material if possible. Has anyone done anything similar - have any recommendations?

  • Hi Rose I designed and laid this feature last year which integrated river cobbles, the work was very labour intensive, so if you are on a tight schedule or budget I would suggest keeping the cobbling to a minimum. The cobbles were hand picked by me from Llandewi brefi (the only quarry in the village). 3314661629?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

3314659437?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024We've just sourced some Caledonian pebbles for a business park and the supplier also has these available, but think they maybe too dark ?

Described as "Pacific Paddlestones Large" in sizes 150-230mm & 300-450mm

Happy to put you in touch (supplier is down here in Surrey)...or maybe you can find a more local stockists ?

Just pulled the catalogue and found they come from Stonemarket...so should be available from any of their stockists....

  • Thanks guys, will look into the Stonemarket source, I don't think the budget allows for me to hand pick stone from a Welsh quarry! Lovely work Jez, nice tightly laid even finish, just what I'm hoping to achieve. Any idea what the quantities work out at per m2?

  • Hmmm, Stonemarkets's paddlestones look a bit big... still searching - probably want more like 75-100mm.
