Renovating a Beech Hedge

I've been asked to cut back a beech hedge overhanging a path (letter from the council). It'll be cut back to bare wood on one side. I've done this in winter to beech and it slowly fills out again but never summer. What should I should warn client regarding end result for this out of season prune? I.e hedge will die (wouldn't of thought so?) or is the late winter renovation advice essentially good practise, with a summer prune not disasterous? Any experience welcome!

  • I have always done this type of job in late winter early spring as it greens up faster have never done it in summer (this summer at the moment is wet you might get away with it) I have experienced it once with a elderly customer threatening letter from the council if you do not do it we will send in contractors and charge you . (bless her she said why cart they walk on the path on the other side of the road) anyway I had cut it all back 2 days before the threatening letter arrived when she rang she was in a right state told her I had already don it had to go round the next day and walk her round arm in arm to support her

I would have loved to ring the council to ask them for a price to do the job and what time of year they would do it also if their work was guaranteed if killed the shrubs and trees off would they remove the dead by the roots and re plant

  • It means you are unlikely to get new leaves this late if cut into hard wood so will be unsightly till next season
