Recruitment Advertising - costs and options

We are trying to recruit a team leader and a supervisor for our maintenance section here in Surrey - What a stress!!! The candidates to-date have been poor and some of them you have to ask what on earth allowed them to believe they were qualified for the work?!
Having been put off by the sheer cost of a single week's advertising in Horticulture Week (how do they justify a month's pay for a single week?)we have been trying various web sites and local papers.
Does anyone have a sound recruitment site/publication that gets to people who actually want to do the job and that doesn't cost the earth?
If not, is it an element that Landscape Juice could include?
Chris

For my last supervisor position I tried two recruitment agencies and got nowhere!

I used the JobCentre (as in previous years) and had a reasonable number of high quality applicants. In other years I have had over 100 CV's through from the JobCentre of which over 90 were almost immediately discarded! I guess what I am saying is that it can be a bit hit and miss although the JobCentre do not charge for their services.

    Hope this helps a bit

  • I have found a vacancy section on our website and an ad on Gumtree has produced an incredibly high standard of applicants without the huge volume of not-so-goods. Has worked a number of times for me now.

Yes, I could see LJN becoming a such a place.

In the meantime try Anders Plus - we have used them. Their candidate Bio's are good and allow fast selection of suitable candidates.

  • We have been looking for a production manager for our bespoke stone operation for about 2 months. We've had a few applicants but none have been quite what were looking for. We are offering a reasonable wage, so we were hoping for a little more interest. I find employment very challenging and I do wonder where all these unemployed people are. I suppose the types of people we all need to take our businesses forward are already employed

I'm adding this topic to the newsletter Christopher.

Sorry I didn't pick up on it sooner but it's been one of the busier periods of my life recently:-))

I'd most definitely like to create an LJN job board. I've actually tried it on a couple of occasions but I've not found the right software. One that was right would let me change the $ sign.

Feel free to start a thread on here though...I know of several successes with advertising jobs through the forum.

  • Bali are rolling out a new job recruitment website this year, for members only im afraid so not sure if that apply s ? But could be the key to bridging that gap between finding unskilled workers from the job centre and people that are already working within the industry !
