Pricing question.

Hi I have recently just started my own grass cutting run to people's properties. Although when I think about it I've probably charged less just to try and get my foot in the door so to speak.

So I was wondering  if I posted pictures here of a potential new customer what the going rate would be from the LJ members.

Cutstomer is wanting a first cut and then two weekly cut's and also wants the weeds dealt with.

Again thanks.

    Hi Jamie, welcome.

Our min charge for a mow would be £23.50+vat, and this would fall into that area. First mow like this for a new customer would be subject to an extra 50% as it's so long.

For weeds, you'll need to get a PA1/PA6 spraying licence to spray anything commercially, even the garden centre stuff.

Good luck with the mowing. Don't start cheap, as you'll find it very hard to increase prices much above inflation with those customers going forward.

Work out what you want to earn a day gross to include all costs. Mowing is expensive on machinery, maintenance, fuel; so be sure to be realistic.

    • Thanks Andrew, I have probably started too cheap on the cuts I've been doing so far however they are smaller than the area above.

About the PA1/PA6 I have both of those tickets.

  • Anyone else?

    Thanks

Most people do start too cheaply, myself included.

Good Re PA1/6 - means a big differentiator for you compared to most others. Make sure you let the customer know about this. Also means you can integrate lawn care with mowing for a complete service. Again, quite rare.

For weed controls / lawn care products - speak to the progreen or agrigem chaps on here. Both really friendly and will be able to advise on treatment products and will be good on costs. Next day delivery makes it all very easy.

  • I always reckon... others will disagree!.................. it's better to start up with lowish prices to get your first customers in the diary.  They'll then recommend you to others.... if you're any good!........... and you can start increasing the prices for all the new customers.

    • Agreed!

    • I don't disagree at all. My phylosophy has always been some money is better than no money.  Even now, with 4 full time staff and our capacity at probably 95%, a little 2 hour 'fill-in' at £30 will give us £30 'for nothing' if done by 2 guys in an hour 'on their way back' in the evening maybe.

  • Re the weeds, would you spray them first and then see the impact on them and lift them up. Or lift them out from first and then just blanket spray the area?

    Cheers

As far as I'm aware mate you are no longer allowed to blanket spray hard surfaces, For the spraying you will get better results spraying the foliage ... Cheers

Location is important too if it's round the corner or next door to other jobs you can afford to be cheaper.
Do make sure first cuts on long stuff is expensive enough as quite often people get you in to get it under control then stop you as soon as it's going to be nice and easy!
