Picking up hollow tines after aeration

Anybody have any ingenious ways for collecting hollow tines after aerating a lawn?

I currently blow and rake them up but seems to take forever particularly if they are damp.

  • Not doing it when it's wet would solve one problem, but collecting the plugs is all part of the job really. Like you, I blow them into 'rows' after an hour or so drying off, rake them into piles with a plastic rake and collect.  I have tried running the scarifier over, which does smash them up and distribute the arisings, but can look a bit messy for a few days.

    • I read somewhere that scarifying them is good for the lawn....

Otherwise when I aerate it's a case of blow and collect
  • I just rake them up and compost them. Raking them up helps aerates the lawn. Pointless using a blower in my opinion.

Andrew by the sounds of it your not using a strong enough blower.

I Hollow core if I'm scarifying (all gets cleaned up in one go) , spike/solid tine if I'm not

      • Robbie so you hollow tine first then scarify? Doesn't that make a bit of a mess of your scarifier? I would have thought it would clog the machine up?

Yeah that is the way I do it, makes the debris a bit heavy though. No my scarifier powers though most jobs no problems (elite 501 scarifier)

I remember help on a golf course for a day years ago.
Snow shovels were used to push into piles then pick them up into back or truck thing

    How about this for 'kit'.....

  • Snow shovels are the easiest. I certanly dont miss this job from greenkeeping
  • I use rake them up into lines across the lawn. I don't rake anymore than 15ft otherwise you are just wasting time moving a pile. I also find scarifying then coring and raking up together you don't even know that they are there and leaves no mess.
