You sure somethings not leaking fuel?? Got allsorts in my van but the only time fumes are an issue is if something leaking. Etesia ride recently pee'd litres of petrol out the hose that comes off the carb.
I only ever smell fuel when there is a leak and I use the same cans as its not that. Sure there isn't a small leak on a mower or something? Dripping down onto the top of the deck but still under the engine or some sort?
Metal jerry cans are the van to go...
I have the same cans for around 4 years! The only time I smell anything is when something leaks! I have a vent in the roof to which does prevent most when something does leak!
Sounds wrong. I've never had a petrol smell unless I've had one of those petrol pumps that drips after you've filled a can.
I use the plastic cans, and in the hottest weather they might swell to the point you think they'll explode, but they shouldn't leak fumes. Maybe time to buy a couple of new ones where the caps will fit better, but mine have to be ten-plus years old?
I had lots of issues with the plastic petrol cans. Some are just not equal and make a mess. The plastic mixer bottle for my brushcutter leaks and makes a mess in the van and it smells terrible. I used to drive with windows open.
But seriously, this is dangerous and not good for your long term health.
So I bit the bullet and got myself three 5 liter metal jerry cans. In funky colours so that I can tell what is petrol, diesel and the mix for the brushcutter. Best I ever did.
Hello,
You mentioned equipment too - could it be petrol escaping from breather holes in a mower petrol cap or a dodgy cap seal - when you're cornering, braking, etc??
To be totally safe with the 5L cans - we have petrol/ chemical safes for bolting to the van bed - a 15L safe is fire-rated and holds 2 x 5L petrol cans £125+ VAT

Just a thought that occurred to me as I was filling up today.
Have you swapped the caps without realising? Even though my plastic cans are the same type, for some reason the caps are very slightly different and they leak if I swap them.
I am currently looking at the Aspen fuel range next year with a new equipment and see if it makes the Difference and is any greener than they state.
Does any one else use Aspen Fuels for there machinery?
