I use 10 litre jerry cans no issues just need a funnel.
I use the sealey 5ltr jerry cans and find them perfect dont even need a funnel but i do have a pouring spout for when its windy.

How does the filling system work? Does it have a valve or something?
It works off an air lock type system you insert the spout and push down to start filling as the fuel reaches the spout it causes it cut off and as you remove it a spring causes it to close. No mess an waste no hassle, I use them on my combi can for the chainsaw oil and fuel.
There are a number of complete cans/sprouts or replacement sprouts that have built in vent systems that stop the glugging seen using bog standard cans (ie they let air, while fuel emptying out.. Oregon, Stihl and a few other supply them.
However, if you stick to using the std cans, you can reduce the glugging / over-spill when using with the outlet positioned higher than the rest of the can, that way air can enter the can and the fuel empties in a more controlled manner.
I Use a 10 litre Jerry can which doesn't fall over during transit and a spout. You don't spill any unless you over fill.
