Paving over concrete

Morning all,

Having not done any hard landscaping since college, I just wanted to get peoples thoughts on this. I have a client who has a large area of old concrete which they hate, but dont want to tear up. Would it be possible to pave over this with thin paving slabs, mortared down?

Thanks in advance

  • Not that im any expert in paving, wouldnt it be a problem if water gets under and freezes?

  • If the concrete is sound in theory yes you could, but it's not best practice. Also in doing so would the finished paving be 150 below Dpc.
  • In my opinion concrete is more suitable for rigid paving in many cases than just using MOT Type 1 (e.g. Rigid on rigid, flexible on flexible. The only issues will be having to raise the final level due to additional material (say 50mm in total if using calibrated Indian stone) and this could compromise the Dpc. You ideally need 2 bricks (150mm) between the Dpc and the paving, there are some ways round this if its slightly less (on many new builds it's often less due to the requirement of wheel chair access. Also if the concretes badly cracked this could cause the cracks to continue into the pointing on the new paving.

So really in some cases it would be ok others not, your have to access this.

    • agree with gareth. really depends on how sound the concrete is, but if you do it properly its not going to go anywhere

Why don't they want to tear it up?
