Organic weed killer

Hi all, hope you're spring has started well. I've decided to go organic with my weed killer this year to give it a go, one of my customers got the recipe from a gardener in Canada but so far it seems not to be doing the trick. The recipe is 4l vinegar, 2 cups salt and a squeeze of washing up liquid which i've used in a 10l batch(10l +5cups) but it's been about 2 weeks and seems not to have worked, does anyone have any advice/ different measurements or have you tried this with any results? Any help would be greatly appreciated. T I A

P.s i am aware that this would increase acidity but i don't use in beds only paths/driveways etc

Not sure from your description what's going in the tank - is that 10L vinegar? If so that would be around 900g acetic acid according to the internet.

Vinegar is a dilute form of acetic acid so, using something like Headland New-Way which is a concentrate acetic acid (240g/litre), but gets diluted 3:1, so ends up roughly the same amount. That works within a couple of days.

Are my assumptions of 10L correct or have you diluted? Otherwise look to the strength of the vinegar used.

Of course, you could always just use the headland product.

I remember posting a thread on this as Bristol City had swapped to this solution as an alternative due to possible banning of Glypho last year. It was failing as a sustainable solution with residents complaining about the fish&chip smell with weeds still growing.

I also understood Sodium derivatives were 'banned' as a method of weed killing due to run-off issues? Does the salt stay in solution ?

So is it a bit of "old wives tales" ?

The current eco/organic vogue is for steam killing weeds with many local authorities trialing or investing in these solutions (even Etesia are re-selling a French solution in the UK).

Here's the link - looks like useful info there about how to make it potentially more effective

  • No idea but good for you for giving it a go!

  • Yea Andrew it's 10 litres of vinegar, i've used Gold swan white vinegar, not sure about any amounts of acetic acid as it doesnt say on the side and i haven't diluted, i'll check out the headland product, ta.

And Gary i'm thinking it is the old wives tale, although someone gave me some organic weedkiller once and it killed weeds in a couple of days, no idea what was in it but hoped this would do the same, i'll check out that link, cheers.

    And thanks Bernie

The clues appears to be in that article as they say it works only if Horticultural vinegar (?) is used at certain times on certain types of weeds.

This must be it here (but not currently available).....

        Interesting feedback comments...

        • Yea judging by the guy that said it destroyed it in days, that must've been what i tried before, again not financialy viable for me but amazing results.

      • Yea i see, and it seems 5L of horti vinegar is£23 and normal vinegar was £3.50 /5L, so the plan has gone a little pear shaped, was a nice idea, i'm gonna need a lot of chips for the remaining 10L vinegar and 3kg of salt!
