Our maintenance customers are on yearly contracts, paid monthly with all foreseeable work included. Our customers understand that we have a certain amount of time on site per visit and that any additional work will be carried out and invoiced separately. That's about as simple as we can get it.
Jobber has proven useful for a few members of the site, take a look at:

What you want is jobber - https://getjobber.com
I use/love it, there is loads of threads about it already - Here is one of them
But from a management point of view most definitely worth it.
I don't have any employees but I imagine jobber would become extra useful and make things a lot easier to manage. Does all your team leaders have a log on or how do you do it Nick?
We have an ipad assigned to each vehicle which has its own log in, plus I have my own and our manager also has his own ipad and login.
We assign each van its own 'colour' and each corresponding ipad is the same. All tools in each vehicle also has its own identifying colour (same as van, ipad etc) and we can track everything everywhere it goes...!
The possibilities are endless...!
I started my business this year and I use waveapps.com.
Very easy to use and you can download the app and do the invoice there and then.
And its free. ;-)
