Non geographical telephone numbers good or bad?

I currently list my home number and mobile on most of my of my flyers and business cards plus website . however im hardly home so wondered if it was worthwhile getting a non geographical number i do have an answer phone at home. but as most of my customers are elderly they dont like ringing my mobile.

so any suggestions of places to purchase one i would like a free phone one if they arent silly priced.

Initially see this thread (read down a couple of posts ....)  where we were discussing similar re NGNs :

There are many, many providers, so watch for one-off  and the recurring charges (also depends on number type).

  • Hi mike don't know if they still do it but orange give you a home phone number look alike which diverts to your mobile phone no charge to caller and it does not say it's diverting cookie
  • Or you could have a virtual landline?
Divert straight to your mobile. That's all I use.
Simple, cheap, and give the local appearance.

A lot of people still don't like the 08 numbers, and some are still unsure on 03 numbers
    • What service provider do you use
      • Invoco
        • Looks like a good system. When someone calls can you tell they have called the voip number rather than your mobile?
          • Yes it says JBM to me before connecting them. Thats how I know!

Very cheap for me as I barely use it

  • Personally I view any business without a office/base/home number with suspicion.

    • Wholeheartedly agree, Colin. Seems silly sometimes given that mobiles are so ubiquitous, but a landline does add an element of trust.

Office based number is good, makes it seem more permanent! A local area code does help people know where you are but a non-geographical number can make you seem more professional/like a larger company perhaps? Do you find customers like that you are local or are more price focussed? If they like that you are local, a local number is probably good to stick with :)
