My biggest job yet

Although I joined a while ago, I haven't done to much but been asked to do a "big" job for me that is. Just not sure how high to pitch to job.

Site has good access, it's 5m x 11m. They asked for it to be levelled off to patio level, retaining wall built 5m x 600mm, tree removed over 5m tall and stumped (I will have to find someone) or maybe all 3 trees.

Just worried that the price will scare them away, but could really do with the work

  • do you really want the work or do you really want to cover costs and make a profit? if the cost scares them off, then it scares them off. there is absolutley no point doing all the hard work and walking away with nothing. work out your genuine costs, labour materials overheads etc and submit it. if you dont get it because they cant afford it, move on to the next one

  • as thermos says, as a lot of folk do not realise the cost of things, they think you can take the rubbish to the local tip for nothing and if you have to take the ground down to the patio in the last photo there will be a lot, also you will be beneath the fence posts never mind the footings on the house  do a few test holes to see what you will encounter also what finish are they wanting as you may have to go deeper than the patio top level

Sounds like the price scares you? I had this a lot when i started. I'd price up and think, how much!! I wouldn't pay my prices as i cant afford them but never assume that others won't. People have surprised me in the past. People with money can be the worst for expectation of cost and people who you judge as not having the money can be the most realistic as they know the cost of life. Personally i dont price anything these days where i dont make a profit. I'd rather not have the work if thats the case. Always remember that something else will turn up. Also remember that if you price to low then you get recommended on that basis. I used to live your Cheltenham way. Theres plenty of money round there so dont sell yourself short. As Dave highlighted - there are issues with that job. All surmountable but come at a cost so price it right. Good luck mate

  • Well I got the job, gave them 3 options as first one was on the high side. They choose a four options combination of the options. So everyone happy.
