Multi-Sensory gardens

I have been very fortunate and been asked / commissioned to design and build a Multi-Sensory Garden. I wondered if any of you nice folk out there had any stories of potential pitfalls or anything specialist I should be aware of when pulling together my concepts? Many thanks in advance.

  • Hiya Phil, well done on the commission. There was a thread on here a while back - http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/sensory-play-area...
(soz can't seem to add proper link) and some of the info there may still be relevent useful. I think Bella d'arcy has lots of info and resources available via her site. It would be interested to see how Nicky (and other?) have got on.
Depending on who your clients are and potential users or user groups are as they may have particular or conflicting needs. For example, for some children with some disabilities lots of stimulation can be a good thing - while for others eg on the autistic spectrum, that may not always be a good thing and quieter areas may be needed. Teachers or relevent specialist agencies or associations should be able to offer some clear guidance. Perhaps if you have particular users you can research relevent case studies.
I would advise getting as much detailed info (about users, needs, requirements etc) to agree the brief before you start on concepts. Future maintenance might be another thing you want to discuss/agree in advance as often there is no provision (budget or responsibility taken) for this.
    Best of luck!

  • Hi Jenny

Many thanks for your feedback - much appreciated. The Mother seems to be very informed and knows what she wants in the garden. I'm looking forward to the project and fingers crossed they will have the finance to see it through all the way.

  • Hi Phil in the past we have made some carved ceder of lebonon benches for such a garden they give of a wonderful smell and still have a silky smooth texture .
Let me know if you need anything like that I am sure I could help.
    regards Chris

  • Hi Chris

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have some in-situ images that I could put in a 'concepts' presentation to the client?

    Cheers

    Phil
