Moss control on paving

Can others members advise me on the subject of moss control on block paving?

We have several sites to maintain that suffer from this problem quite badly. The problem is bad because the large block paved areas have little footfall and are in almost constant shade.
We spray the moss and try to brush it off using a Stihl power broom but I find this tool very hard work on large areas and the moss seems to come back as soon as you turn your back.
We are told the previous contractor sprayed with bleach!!!!!!

Any advise gratefully received.

  • eco-chem moss/algae killer - spray on and leave or other on amazon.

  • I have tried the eco-chem product before and it didn't work very well (or a similar one) but a mild solution of jeyes fluid applied with a brush then rinsed off worked a treat - you just need to be careful if you have plants surrounding the area that requires treating. If you don't want to use chemicals then pressure washing is also effective but you will need to redo the kiln dried sand afterwards when it is dry again which adds to the labour time & job cost.

    Hi Matt,

There are loads of products on the market that claim effectiveness on moss & algae. Moss requires a combination of any of the following conditions: poor drainage, humidity, shade, acidity - in order to thrive. They spread through spores and ‘feed’ on humid air so a ‘cure’ for moss would be to change local conditions as a first step, ie: improve drainage/ run-off, cut back overhanging trees, etc.

Changing the PH is what most chemical cleaners will do to kill moss - Quarternary Ammonium (QA) is a very effective ingredient in Algoclear but an even stronger concentration of QA in the Algoclear Pro (increased from 10-40%) gives the sprayer flexibility to change the spray dilution to suit the target or make the 5L bottle go further in coverage…plus its also readily bio-degradeable so won't kill off surrounding grass or plants like the petro-chemical products…

While there isn’t a residual mosskiller, as such, for hard surfaces QA cleaners will bind onto the cellulose fibres in wood, ie: decking, outdoor furniture. The spray forms a barrier so repeated weathering through rain, etc will keep washing off the bio-film (slime & spores)attempting to grow on a treated surface – thereby keeping it cleaner. The usual combination of removing excess moss/algae by brushing water-logged moss before spraying will also greatly increase the product effectiveness.

    Hope that helps

  • Hi Matt

  • Hi Matt,

We supply a range of products to control moss. For hard surfaces, we have MMC Pro which not only kills the moss that is present, but also will prevent it coming back for up to six months.

  • I'll endorse that.

  • Good stuff though I've found that spraying block paving, whilst killing the moss, isn't that effective at cleaning it if the paving is flat with little runoff. On the other hand, I sprayed a driveway with quite a slope on it and there was an identical driveway immediately adjacent to it so you could easily compare the two....... the difference was really very impressive. I've also niticed its really good at cleaning paving slabs...... again, better with a runoff.

If you wanted to try something different as other methods aren't working, we came across this the other day online, may be of interest? It looks like a simple system...

Surprised the weeds haven't all been washed away with the weather at the moment!
