Looking after equipment while on the road...

We sat behind a Gardener today who was using their car and a IW trailer to transport his Honda mower, Cow-horn strimmer and a few other items inside the trailer.

All reasonably secure / strapped down within the trailer, but what caught our eyes was the way the trailer was jumping around (partly due to the road surface).

The mower was 'bouncing', the handles jerking up and down, with Strimmer shaft flexing/oscillating.

The driver was doing nothing out of the ordinary (35-45mph) but suspect he had no idea the amount of stress he must be placing on his gear.

It was staggering and even I had not realized the amount of movement taking place (normally out of line of sight) - maybe the trailer was lightly loaded, hence bouncing more than if it were fully loaded.

Re-enforced my view of not carrying expensive, vital gear strapped down in trailer.

However suspect that a ride-on would reasonably ok due to weight and tyres to absorb the movement ???

I don't use trailer much anymore (1 day a week) but the ride on is fine on I think. But it's really heavy (1.3t) and tied down feels rock solid towing but who knows I don't spend much time looking in the rear view mirror.
  • Guess it would depend on trailer and towing vehicle

Nissan Navara and 4.5M brian James cargo twin axle trailer is my towing setup
      • I was more thinking a mid size trailer with very little load

I imagine a small trailer with small load isn't to bad

havung a 6 foot 6 by 4ft indespension trailer I can tell you the small one bounced around like crazy though that may be because the tow ball is quite high on the truck
          • I don't tow so I don't actually know. Just imagined a fairly light trailer with largish weight capacity would be horrid empty.

Surely though if a single axle trailer the height of the tow ball wouldn't cause that much of a difference would it??

Small trailer empty bounces around like mad.
The big one is no where near as bad.
the height matters I think because the wheels are 8 feet from the tow bar instead of 11 or so on the big one also the axles are lower on the single axle.
More room to "swing" on the tow ball
              • I get that small empty trailers bounce like mad. Seen it enough!!

I just imagined that medium trailer with little to nothing in would be pretty bad still

But I guess once you get into twin axle trailers or bigger even empty they are more stable. Because don't you need to ensure that both axle make even contact??

I had a discussion with my mechanical chap a couple of year ago about this. A few years beforehand, he had a customer who had a small fleet of hayter 48/56 roller mowers being used out of trailers and was having endless problems with them around premature drive failures. Went on for a couple of years. When he swapped back to vans only, the issues went away.

Twice my Kubota ride on has arrived on site with a flat front tyre - I surmise this happens as a result of the tractor jumping around and the pressure on the tyre bouncing pops it off the rim enough that it's flat by end of journey. It's a wierd one but I can't think how else it's happening. Need to tie it down more so it doesn't bounce so much!
