Hi Amy,
It would be worth considering applying a sealant to the stone, I'd recommend Dry Treat 'Stain Proof'. This should help make future maintenance somewhat easier and will help to prevent permanent stains to the stone. You would need to get it as clean as possible first and the stone needs to be dry before you seal so it would be a job for spring realistically. A good jet-wash and perhaps a cleaning agent (something like Lithofin 'Outdoor Cleaner') should clean it up. I'm not sure where your client bought their stone originally but if you PM your email address then I'd be happy to send the cleaning guide for our Buff Sawn Sandstone. This was written in reference to our product but should give you a good set of guidelines. If you're using chemical cleaning agents though, always test them thoroughly first and check with the supplier of the stone if possible since the mineral content of different stone types does vary and this will dictate how they react with chemicals. .
