Lightweight Mower

Hi all, I hope everyone is well.I am just sorting out new gear for this season and was wondering what you guys use as a small lightweight mower for those small lawns with difficult access.I have been looking at the Viking mb448 and wanted to know if anyone used one. I know it is cheap and plasticy but I am sorted for pro mowers and am only looking for it to last a year under warranty and then it can be replaced. Thanks in advanceKind regardsRob

Get an Etesia Pro46 either new or 2nd hand. You won't regret it.

  • Worth taking into consideration having a rear roller............ far better when you are cutting up to the edges of lawns where you need the mower to overhang an adjacent flower/shrub bed. The customers also frequently prefer to get stripes on their lawns and it does look better. I've used a Masport Rotarola 18" for many years........... incredibly reliable though they've changed the design since I bought mine so don't know how they perform now.

  • Thanks for the replies. I run a roller mower but it is too heavy for one man to keep lifting up stairs and over walls. I do agree that stripes look better but I have many gardens where stripes do not work well because of layouts.

I like the Etesia's and had the pleasure of using the newer model but found it to be very slow and it didn't like cutting low. I don't like cutting low but unfortunately, the customer is always right. Also the Etesia is a little too rich for an occasional use mower. It may still be the best option but I was considering the Viking as it appears to have similar wet performance as the Etesia but is much cheaper and much lighter.

I'm probably wrong as it wouldn't be the first time I've bought the wrong mower!

Cheap Honda izy. Just the push model 18 inch cut about £350 new.
I have 2 and they both get abused and keep going.
1 did 5 seasons it's the back up now though it still starts first pull!
If you go for an Etesia put a review up as I'm tempted
  • I'd second the etesia pro46. Look at a second hand one on eBay or similar.

My customer wants to get a new Viking MB 545T, for his lawn, for the lawn lady to use, good choice?

  • I bought a Viking MB253T or MB248T. Cannot remember offhand right now. Just looking at Manual and they both look identical.

Anyway what a crap machine. I had to take it back in the first month to get fixed.

And the grass box is a total joke. Its difficult to hold to empty and you cannot get the grass out, have to reach in and pull out the grass. taking forever. Plus its really small too, constantly having to empty it.

And the vibrations and noise. Cannot wait for it to "go" so that I can then buy a new machine.

Wish I never bought it. Also there are lighter ones out there.

If you only have the odd little lawn get a real small cheapo from B&Q or Homebase or Screwfix.

    • I have had the unfortunate pleasure of using a 248 and I do agree the box was terrible for emptying but I suppose you get what you pay for as it is a very cheap mower.
      • Not that cheap! it was over £300.

I have a cheaper one which was around £200 (on a serious special), a Mountfield from Screwfix. What a workhorse. Wish I had opted for the self propelled at the time. Plus its lighter and the basket is fantastic compared to the Viking.

        • The 248 was £230 at local dealer and the 448 is £390. I have big pro grade mowers but am interested in a really lightweight mower to get in and out of all the small gardens quickly and up and over walls.
