Hi,

I need to buy a new leaf blower.

I'm new to LJN, I have read through some of the previous posts on leaf blowers, but I apologise if I going over old ground.

From reading the other forums I thought the general consensus was Stihl Br600 was the best bet.

I have not used a backpack before. I am pretty much set on on buying a Stihl.

Mainly I will use it in built up areas in small to medium gardens, so noise is a factor.  I'll be clearing leaves, hedge clippings, pathes, debris from beds etc. I know this kind of work can be done with handheld but it is not much fun. Does any one use a backpack for similar work?

What about the quieter but less powerful models, such as BR500?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Nick

just a thought but we do a hand held blower in the pellenc range with very very low noise and vibration but more powerfull than its petrol rivles.

pluss once you have the battery you can add to the kit with hedge trimmers / saws / strimmers and all with a full days use out of the battery pack so no petrol and 2strock fuel costs any more, no exaust fumes and no large vibration lvls with a very quiet tool which most national trusts in the uk and councils are going mad for the stuff because it means you can work in areas were the public are and not disturbe any one with noise or exaust pollution

just thought i would put another option out there for you

  • Thanks Neal,

I will look into that. I have fairly new 2 stroke Strimmer and hedge trimmer. So I'm not looking to change them for now.

  • To be honest ive got a br550 and a bg86 (handheld) and there isnt much difference in noise. The handheld is great this time of year because it gets into tight spots and is alot lighter and easier to load in and out the van, but the larger blower is going to be alot mower usefal during winter and during large clearance jobs.
  • I use a BR600 all the time, small gardens or large. The handheld is not controllable in the same way and is not good on the arm/wrist. I don't find it hard to get the big blower out even for 2 minute jobs. I hate handheld blowers, they are so tiresome and pathetic! Occasionally use a clients BG86 so I have experience in using them.

I don't think about noise levels as it's accepted that this is a noisy machine but saves so much time used in certain ways. One time I rarely use it is actually for blowing leaves from lawns as I find mowers much better at clearing them up!

BR600's all the way (subject to your expenditure). Go for the best you can afford. The price difference is not much in the BR range, but the power is. YOU will always find use for that extra power, believe me (even if it is to play 'blowball' around the yard ...;-00)

Noise is more acceptable than the two stroke backpacks/hand helds.

However, we do use BG85's for specific work.

Interesting comment from clients is that it is the reving up and down that annoys people.

Consistent, trigger steady use of blowers seems 'more' acceptable.

I've stopped my guys in the past reving them or playing 'tunes' as we call it.

  • br500 is 1/4 less powerful (i have both)  very quiet and not as 'tinny' ....

better vibe levels too ,  but aint got that  umph !!

  • Thanks for all the replies. I don't have anything at the moment. I had an old Husqvarna handheld that i got for nothing, but managed to get some gravel inside. Do others agree with Paul? "If I had to have just one it would be a BR600".

    Thats what I'm leaning towards.

Out of interest how you do you price up / charge for leaf clearance jobs?

    Cheers,

    Nick

  • price by the job  -   1/3 more for commercials from gardens4u top of my domestic full price.
  • Stihl BR600, nothing else.
  • Why is that? I guess commercial work you tend to have larger areas to clear so in a given time you use the blower on a higher throttle for longer? Might be worth bringing your domestic price up in line with it, keep things consisten.
