keeping a clean site

I have a project where builders are currently doing major work to the house, and where the groundworker is also doing the work for the landscape eg levels, wall foundations. The site is heavy clay and machinery has to track across the garden to get materials in and out from the drive. I went to site this week, expecting it to be a vile quagmire after all the rain, and was really impressed with what I found. The groundworker has put in a temporary hard track with rubble (from demolitions) over geotextile, and although there is a certain amount of mud - inevitable - it is as clean as it could be. This makes working conditions so much better for all, and it really shows the value of a good and thoughtful groundworker! Everyone (including the client) gets disheartened by a messy site.

  • That's what you get when you use good contractors. I personally can't stand mess on site, it does my head in and I can't think straight. It's also very unprofessional and is going to agitate the client in what can already be a stressful situation for them
  • Totally agree.  Have to say it's not easy at times, but I like to create 'boundaries', otherwise given the chance the whole garden would be taken up with materials, tools, spoil etc!

This aspect was bought home to me many years ago when pricing a very nice new job. The client mentioned that every evening he had walked past an in-out drive we were working on.  Although he never saw us on site, he reckoned he was most impressed at how we had tidied up every evening and decided we were the boys for him!
