Iv'e been called twice in the last 20 years, but have never been picked for the jury, it's just your luck on the day.

  • Hi Robbie, My wife was on last month in Newry. She was one of about a hundred and she had to go down on day 1 and was not picked, had to go down a week later and was picked. She then spent about a fortnight on a trial which eventually collapsed. some days they were fallen out  by 11am as some legal point was discussed so she didn't actually spend that many hours in court.

What was annoying for her was that she could not arrange her shifts because of the vagueness of it all, so she could not claim loss of earnings.

If you do get picked you should get some time to do what you must for the business, as the lawyers conspire to rack up their fees, but you will have to be  prepared to be flexible.

Can you ask not to do it for X many months due to work commitments?

  • i think its very difficult to get out of it and you do not get paid loss of income just a flat fee also no travel or parking expenses (i might be totally wrong now as i am not up to date)

  • Believe you can defer once. All the nitty gritty should be on the website to which they refer you.

  • I was called up around 15 years ago. I asked to defer to winter(Jan/Feb), which they did. I attended a number of times but wasn't selected.

  • I got a letter a few weeks ago too. I can be called any time from this July on for 12 months. Not very happy about it but not sure what I can do. If you happened to get called and put onto a 6 week trial you would have no business left when you were finished. How many customers would you have left if you didint turn up for 6 weeks? I'm hoping a very polite pleading letter asking to put it off to December, January or February when im more flexible might help, the rest of the year im flat out 5 1/2 days a week.

  • Ask to defer as I said above.
