Izy Carburettor blockages

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  My Izy keeps getting a blocked Carb.  I have cleaned out the tank & fitted an additional filter in the fuel line. I have also changed the air filter.  I get a misfire & then poor starting until I remove & clean the carb.

  • I've never experienced it myself however I've read of people having problems with old fuel lines becoming perished and small particles breaking off on the inside and blocking jets...... seems unlikely but might be worth changing the fuel line as it's so cheap.

I don't know the set-up with an Izy carb but most mowers have a wiring lead attached to the carb for the OPC............ presumably you'd remove this when taking off the carb and then replace it afterward........... is it possible that this lead comes loose after the machine has been running a while, making you think it's the carb getting blocked when it's actually an electrical problem?

  • Hi peter, I've a 16" izy, i mainly use it for small and hard to reach lawns, I've had problems with the autochoke that's been replaced and carb cleaned also before i start it for the first time i have to take the air filter off and manually open the butterfly choke it sticks everytime, after I've done that it runs ok for the rest of the day apart from the odd backfire,

My izy is rubbish at collecting grass especially when wet so this year bought a viking MB545VR roller mower which so far has been great which i think is down to the high lift blade and plastic grass box to help with the air flow.

  • Definitely not the OPC. But the fuel line is an interesting idea.

You open the choke for a first cold start ? Isn't it supposed to be closed ?   I haven't any any problems with the choke.  It's easy to test it in a bowl of hot water.

I find my 16 inch collects well.  I keep the deck clean - a washing up brush is the perfect shape.  I also upped the revs on mine to make the groundspeed quicker.

    • I find i have to free the choke off first so it moves freely if i don't it just sticks and doesn't start/run properly it might just  be mine.

      • Sounds like the return spring isn't working. Be careful about ever forcing it as the little plunger, in the autochoke unit, is easily damaged

I take it you have cleaned the bowl out at the same time? I have heard that they can get gummed up sometimes especially with supermarket fuel. Just a thouhht
    • Yes with lovely, high as a kite, carb cleaner :)

How often do you use this mower. Fuel will go off very quickly on the bowl so it may be worth wile turning the fuel off and running it till it stops.  Use an Izy at one of my jobs and run the fuel out in the winter when the mower is not used much.

Also as mentioned by someone else the Honda mowers often need the revs turned up a bit

    • I have never experienced the stale fuel problem.  I have left machines all winter, with fuel in the carb & they always start easily.

The revs are up - it's a fast mower :)

The misfire is still slightly there but it's running ok.  I am beginning to think that it's electrics.  I know that the capacitor in the plug is a know issue.

You have been very lucky with the fuel, when I worked in a mower shop every year we use to get loads of machines in not starting at the start of the season.

You said capacitor do you mean resistor in the plug.
