Is the landscape industry booming in Scotland?

Remembering back to when I started LJN, I wanted to see our industry brought to prominence in all corners of the British Isles - unlike other incumbents who thought the landscape industry only operated within a 100 mile radius of London. Scottish businesses, unfortunately, were completely forgotten or ignored.

I was doing some admin on the Landscape Engine this morning and it dawned on me that there are a number of Scottish businesses seeking personnel. landscapeengine.co.uk currently has 8 open vacancies, ranging from landscape foreman to domestic gardeners through to commercial grounds maintenance operatives.

Interestingly all these jobs are centred in a small triangle between Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh.

I wonder if this is a golden triangle of wealth and the other areas of Scotland are not doing as well or whether there's another reason why we've only got job adverts in such a tight area of location?

  • i think there is a more reliable workforce working for smaller landscapers outside the Central and Lothian belt, and they don't feel the need to advertise for more positions.

After working in the West Midlands and now Returned back too the local area i was brought up in, i set up a small garden Maintenance business and really thriving for this coming season.

There is larger Landscaping firms in the area and they are thriving too as the work increases.

  • Certainly no shortage of maintenance jobs in this area, I'm usually swamped in work March to December. Definitely a need for a quality local landscaper in my immediate area.
  • it might be that the Scottish residents do not have to pay for university places or prescriptions it might be giving them more spending power than the English

    • if only the SNP were in power in England.......

if anyone in the central belt is looking for a sub-contractor please get in touch with me

Scotland has less disposable income than the English on average. If you remove South East of England, Scotland has a more as well as a higher GDP per capita which has been the case for at least 2 decades (as far back as I could find).

  • I'm in Ayrshire, 20 mins from Glasgow, and I've not stopped all winter, plenty of work out there, been out pricing 4 jobs this week alone, 2 waiting to go and waiting to hear back from others, still got jobs sitting from last year waiting to get to.
And that's not cheap "just to get the job" prices, full rate all the way.
    • how long have you been running peter? I'm just trying to work my way through the minefield that is marketing

      • I've been self employed since May 2014, went Ltd in September last year and haven't had a day off due to no work. Currently sitting with 4 driveways to do and a pile of other jobs to start, need to start employing people,
I was mostly on Facebook the first year now it's just word of mouth.
Had been employed for 15 year but needed a change .
