Improving a mower's performance

This is just a brief comment to note my findings after a couple of changes.

I have been using a new Kaaz pro roller mower this year, honda engine, 21" roller etc. It has been wet a lot of the time lately and it's been a bit hard work at times, stopping regularly etc, you get the idea.

I bought a hi lift blade a couple of weeks ago, popped the spring a couple of holes further out on the rev thing on the engine and cleaned the bag. This has changed the mower massively. It now fills very efficiently even with long and wet grass. A lot of my clients have been feeding the crap out of their lawns and I've been away a week on holiday so the gardens are now on a 3-week gap and you can imagine how long they are. The mower is doing a superb job. The cut and fill is a sheer joy. Ground speed is faster too. I've no idea what I've tuned the revs up to, but it still sounds reasonable.

I actually can't understand why it took me a few months of using the new mower before doing this.

  • Agree whole heartedly. In case you didn't know I mow lawns all day every day. The problem I have sometimes is recognising how the performance of a mower is droping off.. The drive doesn't take off quite as quick, it's sluggish up a slope. But it's so gradual that it's not appreciated until I turn to my next reserve mower which has a new drive, completely serviced, cleaned etc and "wow" why have I been struggling with what is now obviously an underperforming machine.
I know that I want to get the last drop of productivity out of a machine before carrying out replacement of parts, drives etc but it's just false economy in the end..
A few weeks ago I felt the machine wasn't collecting wet grass as it should. Cleaned the plastic box, still not right, thought must be my perception. Then I noticed the lofted end of the blades were realy worn. New blade, perfect again.

But as I said sometimes it just doesn't register, perhaps it's an age thing.
    • I jet washed the bag from my Hayter 56pro the other day after reading this. Wow! Collects fantastically again. Its amazing how we forget how good the machines were in the first place

  • We've nicknamed it 'turbo charging'

Tweaked the governor spring plenty of times in my time however it does shorten the life of the mower if you go OTT!

Where did you get the hi lift blade from Dan?
I fancy getting one for my lawnflite and I presume the same blade will fit
    • I'm sure it was L&S. The blade wasn't branded a Kaaz, but they give you all the dimensions so i measured it up.

It's a heavy blade though and takes a second longer to get up to speed. I'm sure the mower won't last as long but it's all about having an easier Job!

Thanks for that I've found it. I'm going to take the blade off in the morning and measure to be sure it's the same
  • Most mowers are governed below optimum speed to comply with noise regs.  A lot of B&S engines simply fitted a little plastic clip that you could remove.  Most Hondas operate below peak torque.  It's worth upping the revs & it makes cutting much faster.

    • Any idea on how to do on the hayter harrier 56 pros?
