    I don't know if this is the same David but we had a similar problem with our Mercedes car. Our problem turned out to be the battery in the key.

    I think you might find someone has put the wrong key in first........ I've done this and the immobiliser wouldn't then recognise the correct key............ left it about 20 minutes and then it started working again.

    Thanks for the tips. I have bought instructions on how to bypass the factory fitted immobiliser from a guy on ebay... clutching at straws but better than hundreds of pounds at the main dealer!
