How best to remove these Damson stumps?

The area in question is part of a small field due to be ploughed and reseeded. I've contemplated grinding them out but have concerns over getting all the stump/roots out to prevent breaking too many shear bolts off the plough, plus the issue of the ground sinking over time where the stumps were.

I'm thinking a digger might be best but would appreciate any advice thoughts i've purposely left them high to give leverage. I guess a 1.5t digger wouldn't have the power, I'll be hiring one in a few weeks for some other jobs.

.......Passing the job off isn't an option as it's at home! Although not adverse to getting a guy in with a full on excavator if others think that is the way to go.

Thanks

Simon

    Hi Simon

With trees around to anchor it to my tool of choice would be a Tirfor hand winch to pull them out - very satisfying and more quiet than an excavator.

We did one of these last winter in our garden - it was hard work but done in about 2 hours with 2 of us.

We dug down and round the tree stump, which was about the size of yours. The major roots were sawn through about a foot down, then attached the stump to the vans tow bar and out it popped. Touch wood - we havent had any re-growth.

1.5 should get them out. A lot of digging rather than pulling them straight out but levering off the top should come out easy enough.

  • Thanks for the advice all, I've had a go this afternoon with a combination of pulling stops and a thick chain hooked up to a dumper truck. One did snap off at the ground, which may be a bit of a sod to get out but a number of the others came out well.

I think now if I clear around the remaining bigger ones with a mini digger then go again with the dumper and a chain I should get them all out.

Thanks John, Adam and Seth for your advice!
