Sounds a little hash, did the mower have a pre-hire inspection ticket on it stating that they have checked it over, and safe to hire out?
With oil is always worth check before using any mower and again at regular periods thoughout the day.
However even if the oil was at the correct level, to loose it all after 30 minutes suggests some thing wrong with the equipment or most likely they never checked it before hiring!
Had ticket on it that is my argument to be honest we usually check but this once we didn't sods law still on going.
Stand your ground, don't pay and find a better hire company.
I agree with Graeme, stand your ground.
Whilst the hire company has a right to expect you to take care of its equipment, I don't think the equipment was fit for purpose, in this case.
Joe,
You could always ask the hire company to come on here and defend their stance on this issue.
It is up to the hire company to send out their kit fed and watered - it's up to you to check during use, but half and hour? I don't think so! Walk away, they are trying it on!
£300 deposit for a 4hp tiller from Jewsons! Only hired it for a day. Ratty old Camon that wasn't worth £300 for the past 5 years.
