Help with fencing

Evening All

I have a client that wants me to put up a double height (2 x 6 foot panels on top of each other) . Their house is next to a pub in a town centre  - so the fence is for noise and nasty view protection as much as anything else  - it is in a very sheltered position, so minimal wind, and it would only be about a 25' fence.

Has anyone had to do this before, did it work, how did you achieve it?

Thanks

Adam

Adam, straight off I'd say check local planning laws on that as apart from Building Control, I think it would contravene boundary rules.

I can't think how you could make it strong enough to handle weather & stress even if sheltered.

Could you go for a green, living "fence" which would also absorb noise better ?

Hi Gary... thanks for the response .... re the living fence, that is what they have at the moment - a Russian Vine covering the pubs loo roof ... they live on the 1st floor (a shop below) and get a good view of life in the loo through sky lights in the loo roof... !!!

Something more evergreen - what about Bamboo in troughs ? Would seem trees or tall hedging would not work  ?

  • PRO

Hmm - bamboo would be interesting... I've never bought it as high plants, but assume someone would sell it, but that could be the answer - thank you, I will suggest it and see what happens

You WILL need planning permission for any fence over 6ft 6in. (Fence panel plus trellis) and I'd take a stab in the dark and say that permission would not be granted for such a thing. Talk to the council they will have ideas and can tell you whats what. Bear in mind that its your customers responsibility to get permissions, you can apply but no permissions = no work

Or you use large planters or troughs for total control with a simple irrigation system.

Re: boundary heights as per the link above and high hedges act; there is somewhat of a grey area as generally only applies at the boundary - there are less issues if your 'solution' is away from the boundary (accepting it does use up land).

There is commentary in the high hedges act that could actually benefit your client and allow the use of a high hedge - ironic !

We I am meeting the client this afternoon, so we will see if they like the bamboo idea or not.....
It is a boundary in a town centre, and view of the pub loo roof, even without the skylights are not pretty.....imo the Russian Vine is just as nasty.....there will be an update here this evening.!
    • Not very helpful but makes you wonder why-ever they bought a place with a view they hated so much............... surely they must have looked out the window before they bought the place! How about the good old Leylandi............... you can pick up 6' ones fairly cheaply + quick growing  though I'd guess they're after a quick fix.
