Healing tree canker

I received this question, this morning and was hoping someone here got a professional answer / experience, as I never practiced it myself, just learned the theory.

"I have a Victoria plum tree that is about 30 years old and a prolific bearer. I noticed that fairly low on the trunk at a site where there was a healed wound where a branch had been removed at some time, there is now a hole with brown crumbly material in it. I've looked up my books and it sounds like it may be canker. No solutions are suggested - only cutting down the tree! Do you have any other suggestions?

Kind regards, Sandra "

Tree surgeon time. It needs careful cutting out and treating with a copper based fungicide
  • I would leave it alone. If it's on the trunk you can't cut it away. The tree is doing well and will probably continue to do so for many years yet. I have seen several old plum trees with amazing holes in them, sometimes with branches that are virtually hollow along their length and still growing strongly at the ends. The only time I might worry about this kind of thing is if it was in an orchard where other trees may be at risk, but it doesn't sound like that's the case.
