Green waste sites in the Bracknell/Sandhurst area

Hello guys, i have just lost my waste site i have been using for the past 3 years due to it being sold for development. Do any of you know where in the area surrounding Bracknell/Sandhurst and Cambeley that is cheap and has regular access.
Thanks.

Back towards Camberly, its probably only Sita @ Guildford or Viola on the Alton/Basingstoke road that are "official" options for you now.

Chambers will take it at their depot on the A331 between Aldershot/Camberely, but they are funny about what they will let in, in terms of vehicles. They had banned Trailers on H&S grounds :-(

You could try Backhaust's @ Normandy or Gunners @ Normandy nr Guildford, but they had both stopped taking green waste last time I checked.

Failing that do you have ability for a green waste skip if you have a yard - you can get good deals if you ONLY tip green waste into it....

Being Commercial based we generate a lot of green waste with limited opportunity to dispose off at site, unless shredded. If you find any others, do share :-) It's always a difficult issue to address.

If you've read any of my other threads you'll realise this and understand why we now process all out green waster thru chipper /shredders (except for grass/leaves) in an effort to reduce costs (not only in terms of tip costs but fuel & labour as well....a well put together spreadsheet with my Book keeper showed me the REAL costs of disposing of green waste....FRIGHTENING)

  • i know where gary is coming from - after a day and a half shredding prunings and conifers, 10 litres of fuel, wear and tear on an expensive chipper shredder, i found a recycling site close to me - getting rid of waste now easily covers its costs, and sometimes pays. plus i got rid of my larger chipper shredder and i haven't used my smaller one for maybe a year. maybe time to sell that on as well.....

but in answer to the question, if i'd contacted the contractors who were clearing waste from the county councils public waste sites, then i would have found the people i now use - as it was, someone told me about them but i'd never followed it up until a particulalry hard couple of days shredding and chipping.

the council contractors must take it somewhere - i just hope it's not too far away for you.

maybe ring round the local skip companies also - maybe they would know if someone is into composting...... (that by the way is my definition of a long shot)

As we are not too far from you depending on how far you want to drive we found a while ago another site just off junction 5 of the M3 near Hook where we can take a load of green waste for £25.00 + VAT per van load or tipper loads for a little more, its gated entry 24 hour with a swipe card, details at http://www.downfarmodiham.co.uk we found it was a lot cheaper option for us and now waste disposal costs are not one of our biggest! It still takes us an hour to travel, off load and get back.

  • Matt,

We are very limited in this area for good cheap places to tip off. For the few farms that we have around this area most if not all will not entertain green waste being dumped on their land. I know two farmers locally and I have tried hard to encourage them!

I did use to have a roll on / roll off skip at my yard which was very cost effective after I lost the dumping area which was cleared every two months by a grab load) but sadly that went pear shaped and the facts surrounding why can only be discussed over a few beers and not on a public forum! :-)

Besides the other locations already mentioned, it only really leaves the council tip at Bracknell (Longshot Industrial Estate 01344 424915) and being the nearest for you. Min. charge is £29. However once over the min. weight it works out at .12p per KG.

The new Green recycling centre in Ascot / Sunningdale is very expensive but there is a new green recycling location nearby which subject to planning approval will be opened very soon. I will post an update as soon as I get the nod and when I spoke to the owner last year he was toying with charging within the region of £20 per van load.

Due to the high cost of disposal, I pay £40 to £115 per tip and dump off 4 to 6 days per week, I did look at purchasing some land near Horseshoe lake but the small field went for over £35K!!

Bottom line is that if the clients can't compost the waste or use the council brown bins then the waste disposal and my time is factored in the charge. The higher you charge for smaller quantities it thankfully does help to encourage clients to think seriously about recycling / composting in their own garden. I'm fortunate that I always have sufficient waste to dump off every day but it would be a major hassle if I only had small volumes and only made one or two runs to the dump every week.

Keep us posted Matt as to any new developments and I will do the same, heck we could even purchase a field together!? :-)

  • Just to carry this one on a bit, was chatting to a guy about Tamar Energy - they have funding from the likes of Sainsbury & the Duchy or Cornwall, so they aren't without credibility, they bought out the guys i take my green waste to at any rate - their plan apparently is to have around 50 anaerobic digester sites providing green energy - mostly around london - so you may see their presence near you some time soon, and as well as waste food, the abundant green waste this country produces is feedstock after all......

i'll have to ask how much they are going to pay me for my green waste next time i'm dropping some off ;)

  • Thanks for the information everyone. Graeme, a field sounds like a good idea but in our area i think we'd have to sell our organs to pay for it.
I have heard of a few possibilities in the east berks area but nothing set in stone yet.
I will post any leads as soon as i know for sure.

I know this is a CRAZY old thread, but it's that time of year again when I start trying to work out a better more cost effective way of getting rid of green waste in the berkshire area.... Did anyone get any further down the lines of the most cost effective way. At the moment the cheapest still seems to be GK Benford - but it's a hell of a round trip if I've only got 4 tonne bags of grass, but I also don't want it sitting on my garden anymore :)
