Green waste disposal Barnsley

Hello everyone, this is my first post on here so please be nice!

I am currently doing a lot of research into setting up my own small business (one man band), I have paid to have access to the BOG in order to gain as much of an insight as possible.

I am in two minds as to what I should offer whether it being solely garden maintenance, mowing domestic lawns and possibly later lawn care packages or to add small landscaping projects too.

This decision is largely affected by my choice of van and whether I can dispose of green waste without it being a massive cost to my business and prevent it being profitable.

I have searched the UK map of green waste disposal provided by LJN but the closest to me is near Dewsbury- being a 1 hour round trip each time.

I have rang the Environmental Agency to no avail but cannot help think I am missing a trick as there are many businesses that deal in removing commercial waste in this area- so where do they take it?!

Any help/advice or green waste, my business idea and van/trail combos would be much appreciated.

Thanks

John

30 mins there and then back is not too awful is it? As long as you charge for the time it takes, tipping fee and fuel and this amount is acceptable to customers then look at it like you get a 1 hour break per day from grafting and put some tunes on in the van. Just a thought. My tip is 20 to 30 minutes drive each way depending on traffic but not too expensive so costs are always accepted by customers.
    • Thankyou for that, I presumed most people were closer to their disposal center but if this is an accepted/normal amount to travel then that's fine. I'll just factor in the cost.

  • Hi John

Theres a place off m1 j34 meadowhall which may be closer. Maws skip hire.

Have you tried ringing your local skip companies to ask where they go?

    • I shall have a look at those. The lady I spoke to at environmental agency suggested that but I didn't think they would be too happy telling me this info. I'll give them a try thankyou!
      • Maws skip hire is also a waste transfer site so will be happy for your waste.
        • Brilliant thankyou. Thatll shave approx 20mins off my journey times :)
  • Millers concrete in Barnsley you will find them on google I don’t go there tho .don’t buy the concrete posts off them very poor quality in my opinion cracking and mild steel reinforcing bar
  • Hi John you have probably solved the problem now I expect but I was in a similar situation so thought I’d comment.
I live in Sussex but have found a guy who drops off cubic metre bags and then collects when full. He charges £10 per bag for the first three & then £7 per back after that. I currently use a Ford Fiesta (no sniggering at the back) so obviously need it taken currently. But I plan to get a Transporter van or Kombi in the spring and think I will still use the service. The commercial tips are about 15 miles from me and that means an hour round trip plus cost of tipping, which I actually know the cost of.
I just tell the customer how much waste I estimate there will be and add that cost to the cost of labour. I haven’t had any quibbles so far.
I am quite curious what other gardeners in my area do, but if you can find a similar service in your area I’d recommend trying it. Unless you have a huge van you’d spend too much time getting rid of the waste I think.
    • Thankyou all for your replies. I have still not yet took the plunge and launched my business. Vehicles are an issue for me at the minute as I am currently tied into a pc agreement on my car (never again!) and I would like to keep my startup costs low.

Obviously a means to remove green waste greatly affects the transport I choose. I am starting this business with the intention to offer lawn and landscaping services. Both will produce an element of waste. Both also require me to carry plenty of equipment and/or materials therefore I have come the to conclusion that a lwb van would probably fit the bill the best.
