About the Landscape Juice Network

Founded in 2008. The Landscape Juice Network (LJN) is the largest and fastest growing professional landscaping and horticultural association in the United Kingdom.

LJN's professional business forum is unrivalled and open to anyone within within the UK landscape industry

LJN's Business Objectives Group (BOG) is for any Pro serious about building their business.

For the researching visitor there's a wealth of landscaping ideas, garden design ideas, lawn advice tips and advice about garden maintenance.

Whilst I am sure that the budget will bring mixed feelings for many, I am pleased to see that they are implementing a compulsory Living Wage paid to people aged 25 and over starting in April 2016 at £7.20 an hour and reaching £9 an hour by 2020. I think this is still too low but its a start.

Personally, this will have no impact on my business but I know quite a few on LJN pay only the basic minimum wage to their staff. So guys you better start planning for this now but how? Price increases, reduce staff, reduced profit or find efficiencies / cost savings in your business.

I agree that minimum wage isn't enough, having said that are all products and services going to become more expensive as a result?
I think they will, so to me it's almost like devaluing the pound, I'm sure others will disagree. But where else is the money going to come from to pay this higher wage?
Just another way of looking at it
    • If everyone gets a pay rise then in theory prices goes up and no one is any better off! However if anything else it will make companies in our field of work to think hard about their pricing structures and how they reward their staff.  And don't forget the pension changes coming!!

Hopefully it will also be a bit of a wake up call to potential clients that as a business we all have set costs which reflect in our prices.

I have to add that I work on my own so it won't affect me as such other than me having to raise prices as things will become more expensive due to above reasons!!
How many employers are going to absorb the increased costs themselves?

I suppose another question to ask is will those employers that pay more now increase the rate they pay in line with the new rates in percentage terms?

I would like to think we pay at least that already.

Our staff are our biggest asset.

    • Totally agree Nick but unfortunately there are quite a few members on here (probably more Northern based than the South East) that don't.
