  • Wouldn't think it a good idea at all............. walking on frosty grass can sometimes leave temporary brown footprint marks.  Why even contemplate it though? The frosts will no doubt be gone in a few days or cut the grass in the afternoon. There's no hurry to cut grass this time of year and I doubt customers would be expecting it.

  • Wait until all chances of frost have passed as cutting too early can cause major damage to lawns

Me. I leave it. I never mow when frost is around. You can damage the cells in the grass which, although will not kill the lawn, leaves unsightly scars.

Often the temp rises enough to now later in the day so swap your day accordingly
  • Thanks for your replys. That is what I thought. And I don't want to cut the grass yet but my customer is asking for it to be cut and he thinks it's good to do after a frost. I guess that's why they have hired me to be there gardener.

You may get away with cutting late, late afternoon depending on susequent day's forecast.

Walking on frosted grass is not clever :(

Make sure mower blade is SHARP for clean cut that is less likely to burn.

The other day I cut the front lawn without checking the back at a customers. Went round the back to find it was covered in frost still this was about lunchtime. So I need to go back to do the back.
Having said that unless it's a really well looked after ornamental lawn you will struggle to do any real damage
  • Today was a good day for the first cut it if the grass was in the sun and de-frosted... managed to cut about 1/3 of a large orchard on one set of batteries with my new Bosch GRA53 cordless mower...the other lawns were partially in the shade so i have left them for another day. Was very impressed with the new battery mower, first time i've used it, no difference in performance to a good petrol mower, even on long grass, and considerably quieter

      • About an hour and a half of actual mowing from the set of 2 batteries...Not bad i thought considering the mower drives itself along just like a petrol model (and you can set the pace to suit yourself) it takes around 40 minutes to fully recharge the battery, in fact I've just ordered a second charger so I can recharge both at once to reduce downtime... would love a second set of batteries but they are eye wateringly expensive even though I managed to get a considerable discount on list price... I like the l.c.d. window on the battery which tells you the percentage of charge remaining, and how many charging cycles it has had, when you insert it in the charger.
