Garden Vac for leaf collection, worth using?

Hi,

I am considering getting a decent garden vac for leaf collection especially in delicate bed/borders, this would be alongside Stihl blowers

Saying that I did experiment with a cheapy Screwfix titan model that was a waste of time, constantly clogging up.

Does anyone out there use one on a commercial basis or is it just quicker to blow and collect that way.

Any vac machine recommendations would be useful.

Thanks

  • If its practical, I just blow the leaves on to an adjacent grass area and collect them with the mower.

I’ve got a billy goat. Forget the model now about £950 I think it was. It’s great if there aren’t too many leaves otherwise it’s fills up quickly.
For really heavy leaf fall big blower is quicker in the end I think.
I do use the billy lots though as it’s great on weekly/fortnightly visits to my regular gardens. A big investment for leaves only I think looking back at it.

Richard, slightly off subject but how are you getting on with your Stihl BR700 mate? Any good compared to the 600?

The 700 is brilliant mate. I did an experiment with it and a 600 and it’s much the same until the leaves pile up. However when you get a big pile the 700 will move it further so you can make less piles if that makes sense?
So imo we’ll worth it for how much more it costs than the 600

Super mate, yeah totally get the idea ref piles of leaves, although I'm switching over to the battery kit for next season I will be keeping hold of a backpack blower for the winter work, when it comes time to replace I will definitely consider the 700..

On the battery thing. I borrowed the battery blower from the dealer for a week to see if it would be any good.
I can report back that it was brilliant for about 9 minutes!!
That was on an ap300 so do keep a petrol one!

You need the back pack battery for blower. Mine lasts all day.

This year I've just been mulching leaves with my Stiga twinclip prevviously I collected with the mower itself. If it's just for leaves on the lawn (and the ones blown off the path etc.) a dedicated machine isnt going to be worth the investment. If you're doing carparks then yes it is and even more useful with a wander hose.

  • Bought the vac kit for the BG86 blower last year. Really useful in borders, shifts the leaves quickly, makes a nice job.

Downsides......picks up small particles of mud which stick to the inside of the blower housing. Needs the outer shell taking off the clean, not a big deal just a bit more maintenance. Also the collection bag needs emptying fairly regularly.

Thanks all useful comments, the Billy Goat is an option maybe to hire or find secondhand probably for next season now. Likewise for borders a quality machine the BG86 kit sounds like with a bit of care can do the job.
