A garden centre advertising for a cook told applicants who claim benefits that their CV would be put in the bin.

It read: 'I need a reliable staff member at the Hastings Garden Centre Cafe as a cook.

'If you are in receipt of benefits your application is going in the bin. Send cv to my inbox please.'

The notice, which is believed to have been posted by garden centre worker, Gavin Oram, was quickly removed - but not before many of the group's 5,500 members had seen it.

  • do these people ever have an ounce of common sense. Some of the best workers ive taken on have come off of the benefits to work for me. Short sighted, ignorant idiot

  • All I can say is he should of just reworded it, some guys I know on benefits atm are useless, pot smoking 'chefs' that could burn beans so I can understand where the guys coming from but its unfair to label everyone for the select few.

  • Absolutely shocking. This man's narrow mindedness and morals aside, his communication skills leave a lot to be desired and it's an incredibly unprofessional statement to post in public. That would tell me all I needed to know about what working for him would be like!

I can see where the guy's coming from and anyone that has used "The Job Centre" to recruit may recognise this scenario.

Having recruited via them some years ago we recieved a stream of applicants, with most (90%+) just wanting a copy of the job description and application form so they can sign-on again by showing they 'tried'

Unfortnately, you have to dig really hard to find a "true gem" (and it can be done...our youngster went onto an Apprencticeship scheme) from the large number of absolute time wasters.

However, it was ill advised/badly written to make that public statement....

I think in this 'Politically Correct' age many people find it hard to openly discuss or criticise such situations...

My view? The 'System' / Job Centre is the real issue/culprit...

    • no the real culprit is the idiot with the closed mind who wrote it (by that I mean the guy from the garden centre not you gary!)

Maybe he has been 'burnt' so many times in the past, felt frustrated and the need to state that (not saying I support his comments - they were ill-advised, but can understand why..).

The Job Centre really do an injustice to some on Benefits. They are measured on how many people they can get thru the door and out to interviews, rather than the quality and matching of suitable canidates. I appreciate that's a bit of a generalisation, but when you meet some of those 'Advisors' you start to see it's a self perpetuating situation.

Because it was posted on social media he probably thought he'd get away with it!

Note that it wasn't the garden centre posting the add, it was an employee posting from his personal account. He might not have realised the effects such a comment would have on the public's opinion of his employer. Or maybe he did, and that's why he did it.

Those on benefits may be doing so as a temporary solution, terrible generalisation but as you said Gary, frustration can get the better of us! Similar to gender or age discrimination really though so no excuse, he would have had a chance to sit back and re-read before submitting.

Bet he feels a bit silly now!
