  • Hi I cannot give you an exact amount but many of the bigger truck dealerships have a "taco bay" where they would fit one of these for you.

If your truck is later than April 2006 (I think) you will need a digital taco to keep in line with EU legislation. These also require several hundred pounds of further software for your computer so you can download the taco once a month. Alternatively you may be able to download it at the dealerships computer for a fee.

Your tachograph needs to be checked or recalibrated every 2 years.

I use the MAN dealership in Avonmouth and expect you could find a similar firm near you.

  • Ed is right, a tachometer is a sealed unit they are sealed after they are calibrated and to tamper with them is a criminal offence not really a DIY job.
  • Had no intention of fitting it myself. Just trying to work out costings to fines!

Not been stopped yet but wont belong before VOSA try! And as I dont have access to a weight bridge everytime I go out there is a chance I am over the limit of 3.5t
  • What vehicle is it?
You are exempt from fitting a tachometer in some cases. Also fitting a tacho does not change what weight you can carry if you are overweight you are overweight.
It's a few years since I did my CPC but I'll try and dig out the exemptions to fitting a tacho. Personally I would try and avoid it as you'll enter the world of operating licences as well as having to sit your CPC, not cheap.
  • (builder, agricultral, horticultral, travelling further than ??k from home base, with a load greater than 3.5t inc truck/ trailer must have tacho as far as I can tell.

    Fine is £200 plus

I am traveling further and further now with work in reading, hampshire and I am based in Northants big risk not to be covered correctly. Plus Vosa base is less than 1 mile from me at watford gap services and their weight bridge is less than 5 miles!
  • If the actual 'load' is 3.5t then yes you need a tacho but a transit with a trailer over 3.5t as long as it's not for hire and reward does not need a tacho.
  • Gary, i think you will find thats only if you stay under the set mileage figure.

It really is a nightmare to understand!
  • My understanding is if it's for horticultural use and you stay within 50 km of your base then as long as you have b+e license you don't need a tachograph otherwise you need one.
  • Yep looks like I need to get a price then...
