PRO

"Is it essential to have a mentor? If so, how can I find one and what help should I expect?

"The practical advice and guidance a mentor can offer is priceless. Not only can they help you avoid business hiccups, they can share words of wisdom that are invaluable, be your stirrup during struggles and share your happiness and excitement during good times. They’ve been there, done that and got the T-shirt and have a wealth of knowledge for you to tap into. All in all, a mentor could be your saviour."

I thought the Guardian article to particularly current.

If you think about it, LJN is a mentor in its own right with literally thousands of sub-mentors.

    • Totally agree Phil and don't forget the many one to one friendships and business support many have forged from just being members of LJN.

  • I've explored the mentoring path before. Although useful it didn't quite work out because fundamentally the mentor was a generic business coach, not a gardening business guru. Does anyone know any gardening mentors or have a I just seen a gap in the market? A google search doesn't yield much?

So, were you looking to gain further gardening/hort expertise or business development experience? A small business is a small busines - your costings, TP&L, B/S, cashflow are the same.

Having been to Hort colleges and gained various qualifications, I wanted further help & support on growing a business, plans, forecasts and processes etc.

I had a great business mentor thru SEEDA matched funding, who specialised in small business and financials - which was exactly what was Iooking for many, many years ago.

It helped me gain the right view of running a business and many of the processes and templates are still in us today and probably was one of the best investments I ever made....

Phil's right though...a lot of mentoring goes on implictly here on LJN, with more explicit stuff taking place in the BOG.

This option never existed for me (..and I suspect quite a few 'older' members ;)....

You youngster's don't know how lucky you are :)

  • Cheers Gary.

Yeah I get the hint (whether intended or not) about the BOG. I can't stop buying tools though. I assure you I'm going to 'Go Premium'.

It was and is business development assistance I require. I'll check SEEDA out if its still in operation?

No, no hint intended, other than meaning many 'mentoring' subjects can be delicate especially if talking re: financials, rates etc.

You need a peer group and location that you feel safe with, ie what gets discussed there or with someone, stays there...

      Just did a quick search for SEEDA : https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/south-east-england-deve... :( :( :( tumbleweed.gif

Not sure what replaced it or where you go now....

  • The NWEDA is also closed. When more time is available I'll trawl the GOV.UK website to see what, if any, alternative there is. There has to be someone in Britain who is a gardening business mentor

Also search LJN. There's been many discussions on this subject. I've done some minor mentoring as a pay-back locally in my local business enterprise. It's something I've enjoyed, but to do it fulltime takes a special type of person/experience.

    • I don't think there is to be honest because I was looking 2 - 3 years ago.

Have you read this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Start-Run-Gardening-Business-3rd/dp/1845284...

I learned a lot from this site. I am sure a book could be printed from all the knowledge on here.
