Field Margins

Hi all

Have been asked to clear a field margin populated with hawthorn and blackthorn saplings (max 3 ft). I'm after a quick long term solution rather than just topping them off. Also, it's 11 acres, so i'm not digging them out! Would glysophate do it, or is there something better? I'll be re-seeding the margin with a wild flower mix, but not until next year. Many thanks

Andy, you try a sapling puller/thinner....

We used one years ago to clear an area at a business park. With right technique, they are very effective .....
    • Hi Gary - sounds good, but after a bit of searching on t'internet, I can only find US or Canadian suppliers, which come with extortionate shipping costs - any suggestions for a UK supplier?

Would have thought glysophate would have little or limited effect of well established saplings such as here.... My bet would be running a really heavyweight flail or rotary topper over it with a big farm tractor and pulverising it all, then ploughing it up after to rip the roots out, especially given the size of the area and especially if the area is to be reseeded anyway?
  • Wasting your time with glyphosate. Chemicals with Tryclopyr.............. "Garlon" and "Blaster" ........... are very effective against saplings. I've killed off large selfsets 8' tall with Blaster by just spraying the foliage.  A 1 litre bottle goes a long way and it has a high dilution rate and I just sprayed to "run-off".  You could then go over with a flail after everything has died off.

    • Thanks Graham - sounds about right. I think i'll give either Blaster, or Flail 2 a go.

Flail2 is no longer manufactured - Blaster Pro may still be out there but they are all the same as Grazon Pro - it does mean handheld application only.  Nice walk !

    • Thanks Richard - actually it is quite a nice walk, but not in this weather!
