Field horsetail

Thought you'd all like to know that I've made significant progress in eradicating field horsetail (equisetum arvense). I'd heard that due to a natural glass-like coating, weedkiller just runs off. So you have to damage the cells by hitting, or trampling it, so weedkiller can be absorbed. Unfortunately, it's brittle and tends to break. I thought about it and tried passing a weed burner over it before spraying with great results! Just pass the burner over it for a few seconds until you hear it crackle, then spray. You will probably have to spray the regrowth as per most pernicious weeds, but it's not the soul-destroying task it used to be.

  • That's really useful to know Andy. I'll be trying that on a rockery I planted up over a year ago. I dug out out as much equisetum as I could but of course it's tenacious stuff so I keep pulling it out to weaken it.
    Thanks for the info.
  • We've sprayed some with pearl and it has battered it within two weeks, all gone brown and died off.
