Fencing clips, do you dont you?!

I dont do a lot of fencing, but when using panels i always use these clips from Wickes

http://beta.wickes.co.uk/Fence-Fixing-Clip/p/541399

Not exactly cheap when using loads, i normally use 6 per panel if its a 6 footer, 4 for others.

Easy to use, nice and secure, but, especially recently with all the wind and new/repaired fences going up every where, ive seen fence after fence held together with nothing but nails!

My pet hate is fence panels nailed into posts!

What would you guys consider best practice for the longevity of the installation?

  • I allways use screws myself

  • Drill pilot hole and screw. Lot cheaper!
  • I usually screw the panels to the posts with 100mm exterior wood screws.

  • Drill a pilot hole and screw 3 decking screws to each strip of fence batten that's the best method.

  • screws. much more secure than the clips (waste of time in my humble opinion, just a money maker for wickes etc) and make it easy to remove a panel at a later date. also screws both sides of the panel

  • As others have said screw straight through the side of the panel into the post. No need for clips. You don't even need to drill a pilot hole if you use these screws... http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Screws+Fixings/Torx+Fast/TorxFast+M...

  • Surely the batten used on most standard fence panels is barely able to accomodate a screw, dont they start to split at the first sign of stress?

  • I agree Anthony, a screw doesn't do it for me when it comes to fitting fence panels to posts. Then again, nor do those 'orrible Wickes clips.

I use 41mm U-Clips, either 3 or 4 per 6ft panel edge depending on the site exposure.

    Cheers, Eugene

screw 2x2's into the posts, then screw panels onto that - same for the gravel boards, tend to pre drill everything now. allows for a clean removal years later if need be compared to clips

  • Does anyone know what the British standard is for erecting panel fences?
