Equipment storage

I'm wondering how you guys store tools, equipment etc.Living in the centre of Edinburgh there is limited space so I rent a shipping storage container out of town in a small industrial area.Everthing has been fine for the first 6 months until the weekend when some thieving little B*****D decided to break in ! whoever it was took the bolt cropers to one (supposed heavy duty) padlock and cut the metal bracket off the other.Weirdly they didn't take anything ! even though my new honda mower, husq chainsaw and other bits of gear are stored in there. I guess they where after something inparticular.Would be interesting to know where you guys store your gear and have you had any simular problems ? I'm not sure whether to contuine using that site or try and find something else !Cheers Guys

James be careful - I had something similar happen to me.

One night, I had the rear lens units of my Nissan Cabstar stolen. I replaced the lens' and turned the vehicle around and reversed it right up to the workshop door - now steal my lens' I said to myself.

A few days later the whole truck was taken. The thieves had put me and the security to the test.
Not even my Springer Spaniel, who would normally bark if a mouse walked across the drive, heard nothing.

The first visit, if caught, would reveal nothing stolen but it gave the thieves time to measure response.

I would increase security or better still, move your equipment somewhere safer and preferably where better security exists.
  • i would agree that a shipping container is a great idea, ideally inside a compound of sorts,ie locked at night, also check with insurance company to make sure they will cover you,i know van contents are mostly not covered, unless in the van,in a garage.the padlock needs to meet the insurance criteria also,i believe only about 5 brands do. we have just installed a cctv system (£600) from maplins,4 cams + sound, and monitor, with built in hard drive to monitor inside our unit and our yard, with night vision.this is a very similar item, only any good if you have power in your container. http://www.tsionline.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=AIOMJ7&cat=16
  • Thanks for the replies,

The owner of the container said he's quite happy to get a metal box/shroud welded on to the 2 doors so the padlock can't be cut off and I like the idea of chaining all the expensive gear together so its imovable. Any clues on where would be the best place to get heavy duty security chain ?

Unfortunately the container is not situated in a locked compound so i'm not sure whether insurance compaines would insure me !
  • its worth asking your insurance company, they may insist on a specific padlock type and chain
try agricultural dealers for chain or builders merchant or online shop.
another idea would be,a retractable bollard in front of the doors

  • Hi just joined up, but this struck a chord with me as I've just had my van broken into and my Honda mower & strimmer nicked..! Thankfully not much damage to the van.

I have now ordered a drive way alarm...movement sensor with remote chime or alarm box working over 400 ft so I will now leave the movement sensor in the van and the chime next to the bed. I've also just got a large cable lock to thread through all the gear in the back of the van to slow them up a bit, I'm also going to fit a movement alarm to go off in the van too & dead locks on all the doors...

My next worry is after blowing over a grand to replace the tools how the insurance is going to treat me ??? The scene of crime lady did give one small tip to help them though & that was to leave a box in the back of the van...smooth colored plastic with cash written on the top of it, the scum bags will pick it up then leave the empty box with their prints all over it ?

At the end of the day I suppose all we can do is try to make ourselves less of a target.
  • Hi Mark, sorry to hear about your brake in. I like the tip about the dummy box.

I also worry about my van being broken into at night as it's parked on the street in the middle of a busy city. I do try my best to leave it empty at night best I can but some times its not possible. Just out of interest what Is the make of your van ?

Thanks guys for all the above suggestions, I have upgraded the security situation best I can for now.

  • It's a Toyota Hiace, I have also replaced the strimmer with a combi tool, it makes storage a bit easier at home and has allowed me to add a pole pruner too, It might also mean that I don't loose all the attachments at once...???

Don't know how good they are..guess I'll find out. The hole punched in the sliding door is very small..someone knew what they were doing, next move is to add a steering lock to hopefully mean they just don't take the van instead !!!
