John, firstly sort out the legalities and get yourself the releveant Waste Carriers License from the EA (it will be either free or a charge for a 3 year license).

Where are you based ? There is a green waste disposal map somewhere on LJN (I'll look later) and see what is local to you. Alternatively go the EA website and look for EA Waste Brokers/Management companies in your area.

If it's only a small amount you may be able to the clients green waste bins if allowed in your area.

Disposal of green waste at the large waste companies can cost in excess of £60+vat per tonne to local green waste processors who may charge by vehicle, per M3 or per Tonne.

The LA's are massively tightening up on businesses disposing of all types of waste at local/civic tips and often ban vans/4*4 etc from entering whatever the situation.

It will only get worse and is a growing problem for many landscaping/gardening companies

as a p.s. Sita increased their rate per tonne at the beginning of June

    • I have taken out an exemption in order to take a load of non-trade waste to our local Sita site in my van. Suffice to say the site this weekend was full of vans tipping trade waste with the full consent of the staff, who all seemed to be mates...

John, it's as simple as searching for the local green waste sites and weiging up the cost/distance to find the best option, and charging clients the correct rate to include the costs.

    • Where I live (North Lincs) the LA use number plate recognition AND video to keep an eye on vehicles coming and going. No signwritten vehicles at all, commercial vehicles need a permit for personal waste, which limits them to one site only.

    • If you're rural find a friendly farmer.

      • Farmers have to comply with the same rules and have to be licensed by the Environment Agency to process waste - so that is a no go I am afraid - they risk heavy financial penalties if caught.

  • Green waste disposal is as important as the trimming, so should be factored into your pricing.

  • We have some composting projects down here in East Sussex... I either take my loads there or for tiny amounts... It's the car to the tip (shhh don't tell em!!)
I get charged about £10 per stuffed bulk bag and I pass this on to my customers.
The council has recently started a wheely bin green waste collection for £52 a year but it's only big enough for weeds and small things as hedge trimmings will fill them in no time.
    Best of luck.
    Xx
  • As Gary RK says you need to register for waste carrying. Just greenwaste is lower tier and is free, so all it costs is 5 mins of your time to do it on-line.

I have an Ifor Williams cage side trailer which I dump it all in. Then when it's full, I take it to a local greenwaste composting site. They charge me £15 for a full trailer load, which I think is quite reasonable. I add on the charges for my time going to dump it, fuel and a bit extra for profit to work out my charge for rubbish away.

Where we're based at a garden centre in Berkshire there is a compost recycling facility. Works out around £3-4 per bulk bag and they will take anything upto 2" diameter.

They also sell soil and soil/compost mixes, so every so often we're buying it back, albeit processed.

Perhaps this exists at other centres as well?

Get the lower tier EA licence for all vehicles as well just to be safe.

Hi Andrew, where is this please ?  Might be interested as I'm currently doing a long trip from Reading to Odiham to tip green waste.  TIA !
