Disinfecting tools

A customer wants their plum trees reducing/pruning a bit. So I thought I'd read up again so I can mark it on the calendar (will be June). Anyway the guide I was reading mentioned disinfecting the tools between each tree, recommending one measure of bleach to ten measures of water.

Which got me wondering what everyone else does regarding disinfecting tools. Do you treat all tools between gardens regardless what you've been pruning/digging and whether you've seen any signs or not?

What disinfectant do you use? - the guide didn't mention a bucket and brush but on the road a spray would be more practical.

As jobbing gardeners we have the potential to spread diseases around. Should it be high on the list of concerns?

  • We used to use Jeyes fluid when we worked in gardens with 'infections'. That was many moons ago though.

  • I've used methylated spirits before to wipe blades on secateurs between pruning fruit trees. Must have picked that advice up from somewhere but not sure where.
  • I use methylated spirit to wipe the blades, and at the end of the day apply felco 980 lubricant spray which stops a build up of sap and stops rust.
